Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy and the O-Shot

The O-Shot is not a drug or medication. The O-Shot uses your own platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is obtained with a simple blood draw.

The growth factors in the PRP solution are then injected into the clitoral and vaginal areas.

What conditions does the O-Shot treat? The O-Shot can treat many conditions, including:

Stress urinary incontinence

Vaginal dryness

Sexual dysfunction or painful intercourse

Inability or decreased ability to achieve orgasm

Chronic vaginal pain from childbirth or transvaginal mesh

Weakness or pain in the pelvic floor

How does the O-Shot work?

Platelet-rich plasma contains naturally occurring growth factors. When PRP is injected into your clitoral and vaginal areas, stem cells are activated in the injected area, which encourages tissue regeneration and increased blood flow.

With new tissue and increased blood flow in the areas responsible for sexual pleasure, sensitivity is increased.

Is the O-Shot safe? Yes. The O-Shot is comprised of your own blood, so there is little risk of complications.

Where will I be injected and how many times? Patients typically receive two injections: one in the clitoris and one in the wall of the vagina.

Does getting the O-Shot hurt? While the injections are made in sensitive areas, your care team at Umhlanga Medical Institute will apply a topical anesthetic prior to the injections to minimize discomfort. Most patients report little to no pain during or after the O-Shot.

How long will treatment take? Treatment sessions are fairly short, typically lasting no longer than one hour.

How long is the recovery time? The O-Shot does not require downtime. You can resume your normal activities immediately, and there is no need to delay sexual intercourse.

How soon will I experience results? Each person will respond differently to the O-Shot. Some patients report an immediate improvement. For most patients, however, the growth factors usually take about two weeks to fully engage, and the maximum benefit is typically reached in 3-4 months.

How long is each treatment good for? While results vary, most women enjoy the benefits of a single O-Shot for 1-2 years.
